Skate Sharpening Information for Figure Skates
How often you get your skate blades sharpened depends on the individual skater and how many times a week they skate. The blade should be smooth along the edges, so if you notice burrs and rough spots, that is also a sign that the blades need to be sharpened.
If you skate 2-3 times a week, you will probably need your skates sharpened every 2 months or so. If you skate 2 hours a day, 5 times a week – you will need your skates sharpened approximately every 3 weeks.
DO NOT take your skates your local hardware store for sharpening! Sharpening is a cross between an exact science and an art form.
The screws attaching your blades to your boots can become loose due to the dynamics of the sport. Check the screws every 4-6 weeks to be sure they are tight. If you lose any screws or they will not tighten completely, let your skate sharpener know so they can fix it properly.
It is best to call ahead and make an appointment. We recommend the following skate sharpeners:
Greg Wallace, Pembroke 613-735-5266
B-sharp, Ottawa 613-680-4800
