Pembroke Skating Club Celebrates 65 Years
The Pembroke Skating is a not-for-profit organisation, run solely by volunteers. The Club strives to provide quality programs to people of all ages and abilities, for the enjoyment of learning the skill of skating for hockey, figure skating or recreation. The Club embraces the Skate Canada motto: "...providing Canadians the opportunity to participate in skating throughout their lifetime for fun, fitness, and achievement."
The Pembroke Skating Club was established in 1951 and will celebrate its 65th anniversary this year. The Club has been registered with Skate Canada since 1952. This ensures that the programs offered, the skills developed, and the instruction provided meet the standard set by Skate Canada and is consistent across Canada.
All of our coaches are certified by Skate Canada through the National Coaching Certification Program with the help of volunteer program assistants who assist with the CanSkate program. Our experiences and competent coaches strive to ensure that skaters of all ages and abilities achieve their skating goals in a positive and safe environment.
We offer the Skate Canada CanSkate and StarSkate programs taught by experienced and certified Skate Canada coaches. The CanSkate program is on Tuesday and Thursday nights at the Pembroke Memorial Centre. The program starts in October and goes until March with options to skate once or twice a week and for 10 weeks or the full 20 weeks. The CanSkate program is focused on teaching general skating skills that are good for any sport that involves skating. The focus is on fun and learning.
The StarSkate program specialises on figure skating skills, testing and competition and is good for both recreational and competitive skaters. This program begins in September with a fall skating session that blends into the winter session that starts in October to the end of March. The skaters are split into sessions -Pre-Junior, Junior, Intermediate and Senior - according to their skating level and tests passed. The Pre-Junior and Junior session skate Mondays and Saturdays and the Intermediate and Senior session skate Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays. These sessions are run out of the Pembroke and Area Community Centre on Bennett Street where the Club office is also located.
During the season there are opportunities for skater development clinics with high-end professionals, various levels of competitions and testing. At the end of the season the Club has a year-end show involving all Club skaters showcasing their talents.
Many of the skills that our children develop through the pursuit of skating are life skills that will serve them well in any endeavour. Regardless of age, any athlete dedicated to a sport learns skills such as commitment, hard work, perseverance, sportsmanship, friendship, responsibility, and success.
