The gloomy weather did not deter the spirit of the Pembroke Skating Club on Saturday October 29th.
Even with the small amount of dedicated volunteers, the 21 skaters at four locations, managed to raise $1678.15 in the four hour blitz.
This money helps to defer costs involved with running Skate Canada programs such as ice costs and coaching fees. Fundraising events, like this one, are necessary so that the Club can keep fees to a minimum.
We encourage all members to get involved in the next fundraising events so the Club can continue to offer these programs at reasonable costs.
New StarSkate Program
This fall marks the soft-launch for the new STAR 1-5 program that replaces the Preliminary and Junior Bronze levels of StarSkate.
The STAR 1-5 program is designed to target an athletes 'window of trainability' they go through as they mature; in particular, Skill Development (8-12) and Flexibility (6-10).
This is considered the "golden age of learning" and is paramount for optimum skill development.
This new program creates a better bridge between CanSkate to Figure Skating, it introduces more complex skills earlier, has a strong focus on quality basics, and removes barriers for progression.
The assessment in the STAR 1-5 program will be performed by the coach who is teaching the skater the discipline that is being assessed.
Coaches will be introducing this new program to their skaters and getting ready for the hard launch in the fall of 2017.

Skate/Blade Care & Sharpening
Skates should be cleaned before a test day or competition with polish or skate covers.
Skate blades should be dried with a towel after every practice and then protected with blade covers to absorb any moisture.
Skate laces should not be so long that they flop around once tied. Laces need to be tucked in for appearance and safety.
Skate blades should only be sharpened by professionals. Sharpening figure skates is very different from sharpening hockey skates. Many of the local rinks and sports stores are not equipped to do this.

One prize will be given to the top seller (most boxes sold). Three other prizes are available through a Draw.
Every family will have a ballot put into the draw. For every extra box sold, your name can go into the draw again.
If you are interested in selling more boxes please contact an Executive member or the Club by email.
Fundraising plays a vital role in the success of a non-profit organisation. It helps keep costs lower so that the sport is more affordable for a majority of people. Thank you for your help in raising funds for our Club—past, present and future !
